On the day of the wedding.. the guests put cash into an envelope (without a name on it who its from) and place into a box which is outside in the welcoming area...its called a ANGPAO box.. at the end all the money that has been put into the box goes to the bride and groom, however they usually use it to actually pay for the wedding.
If as you say, its already been a few months after the wedding, cash is of course still fine.
If the guests are of chinese origin, they will put their name card into the envelope as well, apparently its their own tradition. And they all try to out do each other.
