Hotel thieves

Beware the Kusumajaya Inn at Tirtagangga - the staff are thieves. They target guests' cash while the guests are out, and have been doing it for a long time. They are careful to leave enough money behind to confuse their victims ('Have I been robbed or did I lose it/spend it?').
They hit me twice in three days, and the couple in the next room once in one day. I live in Bali and while I know that the Balinese will rip you off mercilessly in a deal - that's 'business' - I also know that few will steal money or belongings.
So I went in search of information, and discovered from locals that the two brothers who run the Kusumajaya Inn have been stealing systematically for at least two years. Their boss, one Gede Kusumajaya, has rejected numerous complaints about them, as he did when a Balinese friend approached him on my behalf.
Perhaps that's not so surprising when you learn that Mr Kusumajaya is a former policeman who went to jail for seriously defrauding European investors. Now he concentrates his attention on a new Kusumajaya hotel in the tourist enclave of Jemuluk at Amed.
I suggest that we all give the nasty Mr Kusumajaya and his hotels a wide berth.

• The Kusumajaya Inn at Tirtagangga is the hotel high above the main road just past the water palace. Great views, shame about the people.

To Paul and Marta: My apologies. I probably could have got your money back but it didn't occur to me at the time. Sorry.
