I'm all for paying a bit more than what some people do for stuff in Bali, because I'd rather get a friendly response than be called names in balinese.
But...the porters are a different story. I used to chuck them some money for carrying my bags 10 feet, just to help me get in the Bali mood on my arrival. But last year I arranged for my three teenage kids to come across. I had been there a few weeks already. The porters escorted them all to the money changer, and then grabbed 200000 rp off each of them! The kids didn't have a clue what was going on.
I tried to complain outside the doors but got no-where.
They're greedy, and in my books don't deserve anything. Save your tips for those that deserve them.
