We have stayed at all hotels from 1 to 5 on our many visits to Bali and in the last 5 or so years (10 trips) we stay budget. Not because we are tight, we have figured that the money we save on accomadation can be better spent on the streets, down the beach, give some of it away, pay too much for things, eat well drink well and party hard and at the end of the day if the room is clean, has air or a fan and windows that close - thats good enough.
Each to his own and no-one should have to justify to anyone why that stay where.
