You get a better exchange rate for cash than traveller's cheques. If you buy traveller's cheques you have to pay commission to purchase them, plus if you buy them in another currency you lose on the exchange rate as well. Money changers require a passport before they will payout on them, so you have the added risk of carrying your passport with you more often.
I always take AUD in $50s plus my Visa debit card & leave both in the hotel safety deposit box. If you do decide to just take cash with you, don't carry your credit/debit card in the same place as your cash just in case.
