Cash is very easily exchanged but also very easy to lose or have stolen and I agree with Filo that TCs are a good thing because they are easily traced and replaced. They are also issued free in Aust if you have a gold visa card. I think the issue with relying on your ATM card or your Visa card is that its hard to keep track of how much you are spending and, there is always the possibility of fraud.
I usually take cash with some TCs as back up though I use my Visa card if I am making any large (sometimes unexpected) purchases.
