I travel alone and find that Ubud is way too quiet for me on my own. I find Kuta to be a little too 'full on' when you exit the hotel and Legian gives me that buffer zone before hitting the hectic pace of Kuta. It's close enough that I can enjoy my beach sunset drinks, good restaurants and plenty of good shopping. It's also no problem to do day trips or even overnight trips away to visit other parts of the island.
That's the beauty of Bali. You can stay wherever suits you best, and still be able to see all the other wonderful places.
