We got the train from Domestic Terminal to Circular Quay (brought return ticket) spent 5 hours (we had 8 hour wait) and returned to International Terminal. It was a Sunday so was slightly cheaper. About $17 I think per person. The trip took 20 mins - it was very easy.
There are lockers at the Int'l terminal where you can leave baggage etc if you don't want to take it all over Sydney with you, but we'd checked everything in so didn't have to worry.
It was a lovely way to pass the time and be tourists in our own country. There is a Sunday market at The Rocks which was a good place to buy some souvenirs to give away in Bali.
