We have done a few day trips over the years and visited the springs, waterfall and Singaraja and Lovina. Its a full day trip from the Legian area.
The last couple of times we have stayed in Lovina (Kalibukbuk area) and loved it. There are lots of hotels to choose from. We have stayed at Rambutan Cottages and loved it. Others I know have stayed next door at Puri Bali and found the cost much cheaper and still really nice. These two are about a 5 minute walk to the beach and in the 'block' where there are lots of restaurants, shops, tour guides etc.
Each time we have headed out for the 6am dolphin trip into the sea on the north coast, we have seen many dolphins. We also swam with a dolphin at the Melka Hotel last trip and loved it.
You can also visit the Buddhist temple in the area.
The north coast has considerably less tourists thus more layback and relaxing.
A plan could be to drive up north, stop at the Candi Cuning markets for a wee stop at Crackers loo. Stop at Git Git waterfall and wander down to the waterfall and cool off in the flowing water. Get up to the Hotel by later afternoon. Stay a night or two. Do a dolphin trip one morning. After breakfast head out to visit the temple and hot springs. Then on your way back south, maybe stop at the temple on the lake, drive thru the botanical gardens and stop in time to have lunch at Pacung Indah then 90 minutes of so back to Legian..
