Stayed there for a few days on my first trip to Bali and liked it so much that I've stayed there ever since, in case anywhere else would be a disappointment.

Beautifully situated in the side of a river gorge. Peaceful and scenic. Endless buffet breakfasts in a restaurant which is open to the gorge. You can eat [and drink coffee and fruit juice] so much that you really do need the pleasant walk into town to get yourself ready for a late lunch. But a free shuttle is available if that's what you'd prefer.

I've never stayed on the road level, but there can be a bit of traffic noise up there. Apart from that, just beautiful.

On the way in to Ubud, have a drink in one of the lower levels of Murni's Warung. And the Antonio Blanco Museum and Art Gallery is worth a look. I use the moneychanger in the little shop just across the road from Tjampuhan. Never had a problem when it comes to counting your money etc.

Don't walk in through the road cutting, but go up the little hill on the right just past Murni's. More peaceful and no traffic pollution.
