Stick to the prominent ones on the main roads, no 'down the lane' ones.
Even change money at your motel for the first couple of days until you feel more confident, if there is a difference (lower rate) it will be very minimal unless you are changing thousands of dollars.
My favourites are:
ATM's - especially the air conditoned ones.
Kuta Square - very small money changer on same side as Macca's and virtually next door (almost looks like the shop is built under a set of stairs).
JL Melasti - just down from Taman Legian Gardens (same side and at back of supermarket).
There is also a money changer (bank?) on the loop road (jl Melasti - Jl Legian) on the right hand side which usually has the best rate of all.
Stick to the ones that say 'NO COMMISSION'

I ask to change money, tell them how much - let them count it out, i check THEN hand over my money - never failed yet!!!!

Just be careful they dont try and confuse you with the 'small money'.

say if the rate is 6945 and you cash $100 = rp694 500
be careful they dont try and give you rp690 450

Just take your time, dont hand over your money until you are sure.
Use your or their calculator if need be.

In 12 trips i havent been dudded yet.
