There are no issues taking your laptop on the plane. To access the internet as others have said, your hotel may have internet in the room, or many internet cafe's can let you hook up.
Be careful with your security if you hook up at an internet cafe! make sure you have your fire wall turned on, your virus scanner is up to date, and use appropriate security.
Don't leave your laptop laying about in your hotel room in full view of the hotel staff, can just be too tempting. At least put it away somewhere.
If you are only taking your laptop so you can access the internet and your email, consider just using internet cafe's to do so. It's just another bag and expensive piece of equipment to worry about.
