A couple of years back there were quite a lot of fraudulent amex cheques around asia and I guess the local banks haven't forgotten. As a side issue we never rely on one form of financial instrument when travelling. Several years ago in Europe we had to replace our Visa card and it took around 2 weeks plus many calls to Oz, before we got a replacement. We now cover ourselves with a combnation of cash, travellers cheques and credit cards.Buyer beware
