We arrange accommodation for the first few days then look around. It's easier to get a good price if you don't have all your luggage with you. Just check out hotels when you're out & about (be sure to get a card and write the price on it - it's so easy to forget). You probably won't get much of a reduction on places that are affiliated with airlines' package deals.
BTW, in our experience there is very little, if any, difference between single & double rates at most unaffiliated hotels.
