The ferry is vile. And the porters, who are very hard to avoid, are just awful. The loos on board are disgusting, the boats are old rust buckets, rarely leave on time, and usually take much longer than the 3-4 hours they should. I forget what the airfare is - not much, especially compared with the cost of transport to Padang Bai & the ferry cost.
