more than just a super strong panadol. Some of the side affects have been mentioned but in some people it can also produce hallucinations (both awake and asleep) and general confusion and disorientation. Tramadol is also used by many as a 'recreational' drug so that in itself might give you an idea of its affects. But you are right, it is a great pain killer :)
