When you multiply the tourist figures you have given by a hyperthetical figure of say $3000 per person (a conservative cost figure for a week or two away from the land of high taxes), then we could estimate something like 3 - 5 billion dollars plus that is not being spent in Australia each year. That is what our beloved pollies are after and the fact remains that we are not in a winning position to stop these people, thanks to the spin off from the government's profit from terrorism. Since the inception of higher airport taxes, I haven't noticed any significant increase in airport security at Perth International. They still allow you to board an aircraft with a steel pointed biro, which is more deadly than a small pair of nail scissors. Why? How we going fill out our customs and quarantine papers onboard? With all the sympathy that the government has for Bali, they could at least give we Aussies incentive to travel there to help boost their dragging economy.
