Just stick to the beach breaks where patrolled for beginners. My husband and now 15 year old son have been surfing the beaches at Legian and kuta for the last few years with no mishaps.
There are strong currents though, we have watched many swimmers and surfers alike being rescued by lifeguards while sitting at S&S .
Dont surf the reefs until you are experienced is my advice, my husband does but we dont let our son go out there just yet!
And yes, June is a fantastic month to surf.
