not the sort you are thinking of anyway. Sometimes in the evenings locals light fires but just the smell or fire not smog. I am confused by the OP's report for a variety of reasons.
I think others are too.

Asians sometimes aren't too worried about litter. Before the plastic everything was biodegradable and thrown away or burned. They throw plastic bags as they did the coconut or banana carrier but less rubbish around each time I visit Bali. They had a massive clean up awareness in 2000 and that seems to have helped a lot. You can do your bit by using your own bag and not accepting plastic bags in shops :))

New Zealand does not have an outback.
