We went around Bali a few years ago with our 3 kids. Hired a car for 5 days, left Legian bound for Medewi, stayed at a Homestay for the night at Medewi, nice rooms with hot water 100,000rp for 2 rooms. then left and drove into Gillamuluk, had a look around and then off to Lovina, did not like Lovina much, stayed in a beach front place. Then we went around to Amed, stayed a small homestay at 100,000rp for the room, beautiful food cooked by the owner. Then we backtracked and went to Ubud, had to go back to just before Singaraja and then up and over the mountains. Stopped in Kitamani and then went to Ubud for the last 2 nights, then back to legian.
This was only our 2nd trip so we bought a good map from Bintang Supermarket for 70,000rp and it was helpful. I read the shop signs and we keep track of what village we are in by the signs. Since this trip we always drive and usually go to a different place each year, last year we drove to Baliaan and stayed 3 nights and then over to Ubud, this year mostly Ulluwatu but drove to Candidasa.
We have so much fun, see so many things and we love the freedom. Never had any trouble finding accomodation.
