I personally always like to have some Rupiah on hand when we arrive in Bali.
To pay porters, pay for taxi (if not taking pre-arranged transfers), tip to hotel staff, bellboy etc. You might want to take a wander once checked into your room and buy a drink or whatever. You could probably pay all of the above with your US$, and I am sure they would happily take them, but better for you to have Rupiah.
So yes, I would change a $50 or so, just to get you thru till you change at the hotel reception money changer or hit the streets and find a good reliable one.
