From memory the check-in counters only open around 1 1/2 - 2 hours before the flight. Most hotels are fairly good about letting you keep your luggage in reception/storage room for a couple of hours. You could then check-out at 6pm, go and have something to eat (or even eat at the hotel), come back and collect your luggage and head to the airport. Of course it means leaving your luggage out of your sight and it depends whether you are happy to do that.
