We went to Sulawesi this time last year and loved it. We found the people in Makassar & Toraja to be very friendly. Great (and cheap) seafood at the night markets in Makassar. Stunning mountain scenery in Toraja, and a fascinating culture.
Travelling to Tana Toraja, we had hoped to fly, but planes no longer fly the Makassar-Rantepao route. We were told that it is because of the downturn in tourism. So we went by bus instead, and actually really enjoyed it. You get to see lots on the way. Litha apparantly is the most comfortable of the bus companies.
While in Tana Toraja, we found a fabulous driver. His name is Enos Tandiarrang. Mobile 0812 424 6228. E-mail: enostoraja@yahoo.com. He's a genuine, gentle man. Tourism in Tana Toraja has taken a tumble over the last few years, so I'm sure he could use the work.
We also spent a few days further up in the hills at Batutumonga. If you want info on this, let me know.
If you're looking for budget style accommodation, Wisma Maria in Rantepao is good. The people who run it are welcoming & knowledgable, it's in a good location & the breakfast is yummy.
