Christine, I've stayed at the Grand Hyatt several times and am planning to stay again in July for part of my stay in Bali. The other half of my trip will be in Ubud at a more exotic hotel.
The last time I was there was 3 years ago. I hear they have done and are still doing some room renovations. The hotel grounds are huge and have beautiful gardens . The pools are very nice. It is on a nice, clean strech of beach where you can relax with a good book on lounge chairs under palm trees and look out at the ocean while sipping on cold tropical drinks. My idea of bliss.
I have 2 kids so the Hyatt pools and beach activities are great with kids.
I also like staying in Nusa Dua because I am a runner and find the beach paths and the NusaDua resort area is good for early morning runs vs. other areas on Bali which are like a crazy obsticle course. Not that I don't think obsticle courses are not fun..I just don't want to break a leg before my vacation is over :)
While I do find NusaDua a bit sterile , I like the hotel and think the rates are very good for the quality of the resort. I don't usually eat much in NusaDua except at the resort which is expensive. I usually veture down to Kuta and Seminyak via taxi for better quality restaruants, better prices and ambiance.
They also have a great spa at the BaliHyatt in Sanur and offer free shuttle service to the Sanur Hyatt.
Travel & Leisure just ranked the hotel in their top 100 so it can't be all bad. Just depends on what you are looking for.
