I have to say I am surprised that you feel that Bali is too expensive.
I have been travelling to Bali for a while now (in fact my next trip is my 14th!)and I have to say that I think the airfares are as cheap as I think I have seen them. Last time we went we got a price for four nights accommodation, pick up and drop off at the airport and plane tickets for just over $700 each (including tax) from Sydney. Friends of ours have just gone to Fiji and I can tell you Bali is definatley a cheaper option.
You may want to look at other dates if your travel agent is giving you a price of $1300 ... and I dont think that the $600 special to LA would include plane tickets or tax ... specially if you are going in school holidays (If I am wrong let me know as I will buy a couple of tickets myself). Maybe call Garuda directly and check, from past experience I have found the travel agents arent always right. And if you get your kids there for free thats even better.
