black chillies ?

When in Bali in March I purchased some black chillies from candi cuning markets and the lady said they were very hot.
I have never seen them before and have no idea what to do with them.
They do not look like typical chillies, they look like little seed pods, though there are no seeds in them.
Can anyone tell me about them?
