It's definitely worth going - I spent a couple of days there last year and really enjoyed my time there. Borobodur and Prambanan temples are great, and there are lots of interesting things to see on the towm of Yogya itself.

I know that it is possible to do these 'day trips', but I would strongly recommend going at least overnight as there is so much to see, and on a day trip all you will really end up doing is squeezing the temples in then flying back. If you fly the next day, you can book a temple trip for early the following morning so you will get there for sunrise (the quietest and best time). If you can, hire a rickshaw and do a tour of Yogya - this only costs about 15,000 rp for a few hours, and you can see the local batik, the water castle, local silver factories, the bird market (perhaps not a good idea with current bird fly sit) and lots of general Javanese street life that is really worth seeing.
