Yes each year we book the first 2 nights but next year we probably won't because the place we stayed at Ulluwatu said if we let them know then they can pick us up from the airport, even though we would probably organise a driver and go to legian to hire a car. The one thing you do need for this kind of travelling is your own car. We went to 2 places before we found the one at Ulluwatu and we just keep going until we find something that we are happy with and the price is right.
This year we did just book flights and the 2 nights at Melasti and the 5 nights at the end were booked seperatly but you can also do it with a package, stay for 28 days but only book a small amount of accomodation.
Even the first year we did it this way. Amed was probably the hardest as everything we went to was too expensive but after about 3 hours we found something. With the occupancy rates being so low at the moment I don't think you will have any problems.
