Went to Besakih Temple Complex in 2000 - we were hounded by local guides. Our driver was mad at us when we came back and told him how much we had paid the "guides" to show us the temple - it was more than he made in a day of driving us around the island. My husband didn't care for the experience.
Personally, I thought the temple complex was amazing - it is the Mother Temple. There were a lot of ceremonies going on and the complex just goes on and on...I'd do it again, knowing though, that guides will hound you. Next time I will be more polite but stearn. Hope this helps.
