suitcases and yes don't pack as much for yourselves. Some people use red/white/blue stripey bags for donations, just tape them up well. Others ask the airlines for extra weight, the airlines are really cracking down on this now. In the past I have taken very little for ourselves and filled up our older suitcases with donations, we've then left the donations there, suitcase and all. Purchased new lighter suitcases for our return home. Someone on the forum once started a thread (question) on how to take little/less and lots of hints were given out.
