I have done both. Did have trouble with a nikon from bali but had it fixed on next visit two months latter. I think they sent it to jakarta. I now suggest that people buy in australia from any camera or discount outlet. Keep your receipt and claim back you gst in most departure lounges. You must also declare your purchase on re entery as there is a complex depreciation formula they use to see if you owe tax when you return, but generally there is no bill as I think its a fairly generous depreciation schedule..
I also think the range is better from general stores than the duty free outlets..
