On our last 2 visits to Bali (2004, 2005) we have found that money exchangers (non-commission ones like at Kodak shops) will not accept copy of passport, which means you have to take passport with you when you cash your travellers cheques (can be a bit of a hassle at times). Agree its a great idea to take credit card as a safety net (actually found exchange rate bank has given us when we have used cc has been more than fair and hasnt differed at all from exchange rate we got on street)
