I agree that Bali is one of the most unqiue islands in the world, mainly because it has managed to retain it's ancient culture in spite of tourism, unlike Hawaii, unfortunately.If you get out of the more touristy areas you will be rewarded with some of the most beautiful scenery on the planet. I never grew bored of the visual feast when driving around: people in traditional dress going to a ceremony, temples everywhere, lush tropical flora, the rice paddies set amongst hills covered with thousands of palms, interesting villages/shops along the roads etc.
When I got back to the states (Seattle), I was amazed at how orderly and almost sterile looking everything looked as compared to Bali. It made me feel good to know that there are still places on earth that have vibrancy/color, and above all friendly people who all respond to a hello with a big smile and hello back.
