My post was totally tongue in cheek. I admire the optimism and initiative shown by the Balinese people, who are doing it tough in ways that most of us couldn't even imagine. My Balinese daughter-in-law's brother is a driver. Agus works long hours for what we would regard as a pittance.
My suggestion to those using drivers in Bali. Round off the metered taxi fare upwards [a bit more if it's already close to a round figure]. Peanuts to us, food on the family table for them. For a day or half day, don't be too hard on the bargaining. Get the driver a cool drink when you stop and get one for yourself. And offer him lunch. If he accepts, he will not take advantage of you.
