Question on vanilla pods

I came back armed with a mountain of vanilla pods and also bought back some for a friend and we have no idea what to do with them....
I thought i saw on the telly that you slice them and scrape the inside into your dish..but my friend thinks you would use the pod after scraping the insides out.
Can anyone help and also maybe a few ideas on what to use them in other than custard dishes?
