I have bought many paintings over my many trips. These days i go straight to Ubud because it has the best selection of gallaries and artist studios.
If you follow the main RD down the hill and over the bridge, all the way up the hill are many gallaries, at least 20+.
There are others in the cumpuhan area, up on the sayan ridge area.
This is a good place to start.
You need to put aside at least 2-3 days to have a good search, take along a digital camera and take snaps of what you like, you soon go into visual overload and it's good to have the snaps to refer too.
All styles are available,.
Like anything you get what you pay for but the value in Bali is VERY good.
For around the 1 million to 5 mil rp ($130-600) you get a lot to choose from.
For $1000+ aud you can get something from an established artist that would be worth many many times more for something of comparable quality in Aust.
Prices are cheaper direct from the artist but often they are hard to find, but if you have more time you should be ok.
Yes, you roll them up and depending on the size cost from $150AUD to frame back in OZ.
I usually get the frame from in Bali also, pull it to pieces and get the framer to put it all back together..
Hope this helps and good luck, it's such a great thing to do while in bali.
