Java isn't like Bali. Is is every bit as interesting as Bali in my opinion, but different in many ways.
It all depends on where you are going in Java as to what it will be like. In Yogyakarta, for example, there are restaurants and markets that are comparable to those in Bali. In Jakarta, you'll find great nightclubs and bars (as well as thousands of sky rise buildings and lots of pollution). But in you have to remember that Java is a Muslim island, and while the people share the same friendliness as those in Bali, the culture is different. You should dress more conservatively in Java than you might in Kuta (at least knees and shoulders covered), and expect people to perhaps not speak English as well as in Bali (a few phrases of Bahasa are useful).
