I found a copy of the email that my friend sent to me when I asked him for recommendations (he has been to Bali many times).
"The two luxury resorts near Ubud that I am familiar with are the Amandari
and Kupa Kupa Barong both of which overlook a beautiful river gorge.
The Amandari is unbelievably expensive. I know several people who have
stayed there and they all rave about it.
The Kupa Kupa Barong is allegedly where Mick and Jerry hall honeymooned. I
actually got a quasi reasonable rate and stayed there once. Very nice rooms
and one of the nicest views I have ever seen. The management is awful and
this was reflected in a very surly attitude by the staff. Whatever you do,
don't stay here. We couldn't wait to leave."
