Tipping is not generally expected but most restaurants and hotels add a 'service charge' to your bill. It is always debatable where this service charge goes however.
Tipping a taxi driver is easy as other posters have pointed out. Tipping a particular waiter or shop assistant who has caught your attention is not so easy however and any donation might actually end up where you least expect it to go.
