I learnt some Bahasa Indonesian to begin with and made an effort with the basics, like good morning, how are you, thank you, how much etc.
Then a friend from Bali came to Australia to stay for a few months and taught us some basic phrases in Balinese - well, what a different reaction on our next trip! It seemed to me that not many foreigners get a chance to learn Balinese and they really appreciated our funny attempts at pronunciation.....now we stick to Bahasa Indonesia at the airport and then once out the door have some fun with Balinese.
I recommend trying to learn a few words in the language many speak at home, it always brings out a smile and a laugh!
