I have only ever been approached by porters who want to exchange aussie gold coins for rupiah. I don't have a problem with this & I am only too happy to help them out.
Imagine what a pain it must be to have to rely on the kindness of strangers to exchange your tips/wages for a usable currency every day? Or to ask for spare change, if that is the case. The cost of a cappuccino or beer to you could pay for a few meals for them.
You wouldn't last 5 minutes in their shoes!
