I was in Indonesia when the 'Papua' story apparently broke - and I was in Java as well as Bali - knew absolutely nothing about it until I got back to Oz some days later. The media here in Oz seems obsessed with any negative stories regarding Indonesia, yet in Indonesia itself it is a non-event. As someone who is a 'conspiracy theorocist' I often wonder if Indonesia serves to divert the attention of the average newspaper reader away from important items - such as the wheat board inquiry? A bit like throwing a few children into the sea maybe? Either way most Indonesians are too busy trying to put food on the table to worry about overpaid politicians trading insults and inuendo.
