You can get a driver to take you to Ubud, wait, and come back, but it's pretty expensive if you are on a budget.
When I went for the day last summer we got one of the shuttle bus services (around 70,000 return if I remember rightly) that are advertised all around Kuta. You don't have to specify a return time, or you an even buy a single and buy another single from Ubud to come back as there are a lot of shuttle companies advertised around Ubud that go back at different times.
