AUSTRALIA PRESS: Qantas To Axe Australian Airlines
Qantas Airways Ltd.'s (QAN.AU) first Asian expansion play has proved a failure, with the Australian carrier expected to announce later Tuesday the axing of its Queensland-based leisure brand Australian Airlines, the Australian reports.
The newspaper says Australian Airline's planes will be returned to Qantas mainline operations from midyear as the company concentrates on launching its low-cost Jetstar International.
It is understood Qantas officials believe Australian Airline's demise is necessary to wipe the slate clean and allow the airline to concentrate on its twin-brand philosophy, the report says.
