which is quite a known fault with timber that hasnt been kiln dried then you can make a thin paste of sawdust and aquadhere glue and use this to fill the gap then wait till it dries ( as it may shrink), repeat if necessary then when dried fully just run a little stain over it.You will need to clean up as you go but it works a treat and really doesnt look too bad.This type of furniture is meant to be rustic and is handmade so there are always "characteristics "... beats melamine, chipboard and staples anyday !!.
