just stand on the starting blocks (the feet positions) on the side of the bowl. Bend as if about to sit on a chair (but don't). Actually at the gym this is a popular exercise for the calf muscles and the stomach. Practice it 20 times in a row at home and you will know what I mean.
I wouldn't try the all fours method. You really don't want to be puting your hands on ther floor or on anything else in some of the local toilets. Bring sanitary hand wipes with you.
You can avoid them. There are western toilets in lots of places. Just visit McDonalds, A&W etc and use theirs.
