The VISA is paid in any currency. I paid $50AUD and it took about 10 seconds to get my change in Rupiah. The extra cash was good for the porters tips as I didn't have much left from last time.
If you change your money into US$ then into Rupiah you are paying charges twice. Just bring your money it's accepted everywhere. If places quote in $US run (it usually means it's expensive). But if you like expensive things/places just ask for the price in Rupiah.
