Alot of people change a small amount of cash into IDR, to cover the first day's expenses eg: taxis, meals, etc. before searching for a good rate at a money changer.
Australians have to pay for a tourist visa on entry to Bali, so often change cash into USD to cover it. You can pay this in any currency though & take your chances with the exchange rate on the day.
Money is a universal language & speaks just as well in Bali as anywhere else. You will have no trouble changing your GBP, so rest assured. I hope this helps.
