as hand luggage is a separate allowance.
If you are travelling together & check in together the weight is usually combined (not the hand luggage) as long as the weight in one suitcase is not too heavy...split it between the two cases.
Umm I'd forget about offering kangaroo toys & stay as close to the weight allowance as you can...leave the rest there.
