Lombok is much less touisty than Bali - people say it is like Bali years ago, and I guess maybe it is in terms of numbers, but in other ways, it is nothing like Bali. It is Muslim rather than Hindu for a start. The culture is very different. Some of the beaches are better than Bali, some are worse - it depends where you go. The one at Kuta Lombok is very nice indeed. The Gilis are particularly fantastic for beaches, snorkelling/diving relaxing.
Some people love Lombok, others don't - I think that people that expect another Bali are disappointed. It is very different, but I think that is a good thing as it is nice to have a change. I loved the island, and the Gilis, and would definitely recommend a visit. Go to Lombok Lovers forum for more detailed info on where to stay on whatever budget you have.
